What do women really want? What do they look for when it comes to their dream guy? While many women claim they’re looking for the complete package, others argue that there’s far more to their dream guy than a wallet full of money, a great personality and devilishly handsome good looks. And, to be honest, we couldn’t agree more!
While celebrities like Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling often get top billing as Hollywood’s hottest men, we couldn’t help but wonder about the regular looking Joe’s who share the spotlight. How have these average looking celebs fared when it comes to their careers and even love? You might be surprised!
Following Cupid’s arrow straight to the red carpet, concert stage and basketball court, we found 16 average (and some below average) looking men who cashed in on fame and married total knockouts! In fact, some of these regular Joe’s hit the jackpot more than once in life after marrying women most men can only dream about! Are you ready to see these “beauty and the beast” matches that are sure to make you a tad bit jealous? Let’s get started with one of music’s greatest legends!
#16 – Billy Joel (Christie Brinkley)
“Uptown girl she’s been living in her uptown world.” One of the best-selling recording artists of all time, Billy Joel skyrocketed to stardom with the release of his first hit song – “The Piano Man” – in 1973 and hasn’t looked back since. The six-time Grammy Award winner even proved that his personal life was just as hot as his career with the release of “Uptown Girl” in 1983 which was inspired by his relationship with then-girlfriend Elle Macpherson and his future flame, Christie Brinkley.
Just as the “Uptown Girl” music video shows a normal guy wooing a beautiful woman far out of his league, Joel wooed Brinkley straight to the altar in March 1985. Only five years younger than Joel whose life in the music industry had already begun to age him, Brinkley gave birth to their daughter, Alexa Ray, in December 1985. Divorcing in 1994 and remaining friends with Brinkley, Joel went on to marry knockouts Katie Lee (2004-2009) and Alexis Roderick (2015-present), giving this musician plenty of inspiration for future hits!
#15 – Flavio Briatore (Elisabetta Gregoraci)
One of the most notorious businessmen in Italy who evaded fraud charges throughout the 1980s, Flavio Briatore shifted his focus from restaurant management and insurance sales to auto racing in the 1990s. Becoming one of the biggest names in the industry as the manager of the Luciano Benneton Formula One team, which is now known as Renault F1, Briatore made headlines once again in 2007 when he became part-owner of London’s Queens Park Rangers football club.
Accustomed to always getting what he wants, Briatore used his notoriety and his wealth to land a wife who would probably never go for him otherwise. Dating supermodel Heidi Klum in 2003, Briatore married “Wonderbra” model and fellow Italian Elisabetta Gregoraci in June 2008. At the time of the nuptials, Briatore was 58 years old while his bride was only 28. Definitely an odd match, they have managed to make it work and even added a child to the mix when Gregoraci gave birth to their son, Falco Nathan, in 2010. We only hope Falco doesn’t pick up his father’s sketchy business practices!
#14 – Russell Brand (Katy Perry)
Hot Brit or definitely not? While some might consider English comedian and actor Russell Brand to be attractive, others might say he’s more of a gangly Brit who won the lottery when he started dating singer Katy Perry in 2009. First gaining fame in 2004 as the host of Big Brother’s Big Mouth, Brand went on to land a major role in the 2008 film Forgetting Sarah Marshall and has made headlines ever since with his activism, outrageous behavior and drug use.
Long before getting kicked off of MTV for his behavior, Brand met Perry at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards where Perry launched a water bottle at his head during rehearsal. With an obvious connection (that left Perry’s fans completely confused), the couple married just a year later in October 2010 in a Hindu ceremony in India. The marriage, however, wouldn’t last long (shocker!) as Brand ended their relationship by text message on December 31, 2011. Officially divorced in July 2012, we have no doubt this ending was a happy one for both of them.
#13 – Max Handelman (Elizabeth Banks)
Perhaps not one of the better known celebrities on our list, Max Handelman is a celebrity in the sports world where he’s recognized as a fantasy football expert. First working as an investment banker after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Handelman joined News Corporation where he used his hobby and love of fantasy football to help launch Fox Sports’ entire fantasy football division. Having since co-written Why Fantasy Football Matters: (And Our Lives Do Not), Handelman has earned his place in the fantasy football spotlight!
Obviously living the dream when it comes to his career as a sportswriter and producer, Handleman’s personal life is even better as he calls the beautiful and talented Elizabeth Banks his wife. Meeting on their first day of college in 1992, the couple married in 2003 as their careers blossomed. Having since welcomed two sons, Felix and Magnus Mitchell, we can’t imagine how Handleman’s life could get any better after waking up and falling asleep every day next to his soulmate and sweetheart! What a lucky man!
#12 – Howard Stern (Beth Ostrosky)
Who hasn’t heard of Howard Stern? Describing himself as the “King of All Media,” Howard Stern is one of the original shock jocks who captured a national audience as he launched his radio career in the late 1970s. Spending 20 years at WXRK in New York City as the host of The Howard Stern Show, Stern made a name for himself as one of the highest paid radio figures as well as one of the most fined radio hosts with $2.5 million in indecent content charges.
Well on his way to fame, Stern married his first love, Alison Berns, in 1978 but his growing focus on work did little to keep the romance alive and led the couple to divorce in 2001. Dating model and television host Beth Ostrosky shortly after, the couple tied the knot in October 2008 at a New York City restaurant when she was 36 and he was 54 years old. With Ostrosky making the FHM list of the 100 Sexiest Women on four different occasions, we can’t help but think this “Beauty and the Beast” couple is one of the oddest on the red carpet!
#11 – Marilyn Manson (Dita Von Teese)
By the mid-1990s, rock music took a strange new direction when former music journalist Brian Hugh Warner debuted as Marilyn Manson. Establishing himself as a cultural icon known for his shocking image, dramatic musical acts and extravagant behavior, Manson attracted a large following with the band thanks to records like Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals that left little room for doubt that he was a controversial influence to young listeners.
Despite his intimidating appearance, Manson has dated some of the most gorgeous women in Hollywood including actresses like Rose McGowan and Evan Rachel Wood, both of whom called off their engagements to the rocker. In 2004, Manson married burlesque dancer and model Dita Von Teese after courting her since 2001 when he asked her to dance in one of his music videos. Although the couple shared similar lifestyles, the romance fizzled as they called it quits in December 2007.
#10 – Griffin Guess (Marisa Miller)
Definitely not the ugliest celebrity on our list, Griffin Guess is, at best, considered an average-looking guy whose celebrity status skyrocketed when he married supermodel and actress Marisa Miller in 2006. Launching his career marketing music videos in 1998 with his company Machete, Guess made the move to Ascent Media in 2001 where he worked with some of the biggest artists in music including Kanye West, 50 Cent, Good Charlotte, Weezer and more!
Aside from his high profile music clients, Guess’s marriage to Miller has kept him in the spotlight as well and for good reason – his wife is gorgeous! With Miller as one of the biggest names in the industry, she has been featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue and was a Victoria’s Secret Angel for over a decade before trying her hand at acting. With two sons and their 10th anniversary right around the corner, we have no doubt this celebrity couple will be around for years to come!
#9 – Sacha Baron Cohen (Isla Fisher)
The king of undercover comedy, British actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen is best known for his characters Ali G., Borat Sagdiyev, Bruno Gehard and Admiral General Aladeen in films like Borat and Bruno. A far cry from his early days as a model, the award-winning Cohen rarely appears as himself in public these days but, on the rare occasions when he does, he’s always in good company with his gorgeous redheaded wife, Isla Fisher.
Before becoming household names in Hollywood, Fisher and Cohen met in 2002 at a party in Sydney, Australia while Cohen was playing Ali G on his own show in England. Getting engaged in 2004, Fisher’s career took off with roles in I Heart Huckabees and Wedding Crashers as Cohen filmed Borat and Bruno. After a six-year-engagement and the birth of their daughter Olive in 2007, Cohen and Fisher tied the knot in March 2010 and have since welcomed another daughter, Elula Lottie, in 2010 and a son, Montgomery Moses, in 2015.
#8 – Olivier Sarkozy (Mary-Kate Olsen)
Stretching the definition of “celebrity” a bit with the next guy on our list, Olivier Sarkozy is a huge name in France as he is not only a big-time banker, his half-brother Nicolas is also the former President of France. Marrying fashion writer and children’s book author Charlotte Bernard in 1997, the couple were married for 14 years and had two children together before calling it quits in 2010. By 2012, Sarkozy made American headlines when he started dating fashion designer Mary-Kate Olsen, who is 18 years younger.
Dating for over three years while maintaining high levels of privacy, news broke of the couple’s engagement in March 2014 when paparazzi photographed Olsen wearing a shiny new engagement ring. Tying the knot in November 2015 as close friends and family gathered at a private New York City residence, the couple continues to prove that age is just a number when it comes to love as their relationship is still going strong today.
#7 – Dax Shepard (Kristen Bell)
One of Hollywood’s favorite funnymen, Dax Shepard made his way to the red carpet after stellar performances in films like Employee of the Month, Without a Paddle and Idiocracy before making the transition to television as Crosby Braverman in the NBC hit series Parenthood. Rarely ever cast as the heartthrob who gets the gorgeous girl in the end, Shepard’s real life is a different story thanks to his wife, Kristen Bell.
Lucking out in 2007, Shepard met the star of Veronica Mars and Forgetting Sarah Marshall only to find himself head over heels in love. By 2010, the couple announced their engagement but delayed their wedding plans until same-sex marriage was legalized in California in June 2013. After Bell proposed to Shepard on Twitter for the world to see, they were married on October 17, 2013 at the Beverly Hills County courthouse. With incredible careers and two beautiful daughters, this is easily one of our favorite Hollywood couples!
#6 – Geoffrey Arend (Christina Hendricks)
Often better recognized by his face rather than by his name, Geoffrey Arend started his career in Hollywood as a voice artist in Daria before landing small roles in films like Super Troopers where he was cast as the stoner who was terrified of the cops and The Ringer where he played a mentally challenged athlete. Having since made his transition into television, Arend appeared in the ABC series Body of Proof before joining the cast of the CBS hit drama Madam Secretary.
Believe it or not, Arend is one of the most shocking celebs on our list because he’s married to the incredibly talented and stunning Christina Hendricks. Best known for her role as Joan Holloway in Mad Men, Hendricks and her husband have fellow Mad Men star Vincent Kartheiser to thank for their introduction. After meeting in 2007 for the first time, Hendricks admittedly went home and Googled his name before agreeing to a date. Marrying in October 2009, the couple has no plans on starting a family and instead looks forward to building their careers in Hollywood.
#5 – William H. Macy (Felicity Huffman)
Describing himself as a “middle American…everyman” kind of guy, William H. Macy earned his fortune and fame in Hollywood over the last three decades thanks to appearances in small and independent films like Shameless, Boogie Nights and Fargo. Though never likely to make Hollywood’s list as “Sexiest Man Alive,” the Emmy-Award winner managed to catch the eye of Felicity Huffman and she’s been all he’s ever wanted and needed since 1997. How’s that for true love?
Known for her award-winning roles in hit television series like Sports Night, Desperate Housewives and American Crime, Huffman first met Macy in the mid-1990s at the Atlantic Theater Company. In what was “love at first sight” for Huffman (who is 12 years younger than Macy), the couple married in September 1997 and have since grown to a family of four after welcoming daughters Sophia Grace on December 1, 2000 and Georgia Grace on March 14, 2002.
#4 – Marko Jaric (Adriana Lima)
Towering at 6’7” tall, Serbian basketball star Marko Jaric may not be the best-looking athlete we’ve ever seen but, what he lacks in good looks, he more than makes up for on the court. Playing in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies from 2002 until 2009, Jaric retired from basketball in 2011 leaving him plenty of time to focus on his family life.
Marrying one of the most famous supermodels in the world, Jaric proposed to Brazilian native Adriana Lima on her 27th birthday only to surprise her with a Valentine’s Day wedding two years later in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. After having two daughters – Valentina and Sienna – in 2009 and 2012, the couple announced their separation in May 2014. With divorce proceedings in the works, Jaric is left with a forgotten basketball career as Lima receives quite the fanfare as one of the world’s most eligible bachelorettes!
#3 – Jay-Z (Beyonce)
Recognized as one of the most successful hip-hop artists in America with a net worth at over $520 million (and counting!), Jay Z has taken home 21 Grammy Awards and dozens of others over the last two decades thanks to albums like Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint and The Black Album. With fortune and fame as a rapper, entrepreneur and investor, Jay Z has proven he can have any woman in the world even someone as famous as Beyonce.
First getting together in 2003, Jay Z and Beyonce have kept their relationship low profile since the very beginning. Quietly marrying in April 2008, Beyonce didn’t show off her $5 million wedding ring until a concert in September when fans went wild over the news. Now considered the most powerful couple in the music industry as well as two of the most influential people in the world, Jay Z and Beyonce welcomed their first child on January 7, 2012 when daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, was born.
#2 – Lyle Lovett (Julia Roberts)
Quite possibly one of the “goofiest looking” celebs on our list, Lyle Lovett has been around the country music scene for more than 30 years, yet his biggest hit – “Cowboy Man” – only reached number 10 on the country charts. His staying power and likeability, however, have made him a household name in the industry as he’s taken home four Grammy Awards and somehow managed to snag one of the most famous actresses in Hollywood, Julia Roberts.
In a whirlwind romance where opposites attract, Lovett and Roberts met in 1993 on the set of The Player. After dating for three weeks, they eloped in June 1993 in Indiana but the romance, unfortunately, wouldn’t last. Divorcing two years later in March 1995 as a result of growing career demands, Roberts and Lovett remained friends as they went their separate ways. By 1997, Lovett was already seeing yet another gorgeous knockout, April Kimble, who has been by his side for over 19 years.
#1 – Ric Ocasek (Paulina Porizkova)
As part of one of the most popular rock bands throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Ric Ocasek was a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter with The Cars. Easily recognized by his lanky frame and pale skin, many say that Ocasek looks more like a “grandma who smokes too many cigarettes.” Of course, while this may be true, Ocasek definitely gets the last laugh after marrying model, actress and author Paulina Porizkova.
First meeting in 1984 during the filming of The Cars’ music video “Drive,” Ocasek was already on his second wife and Porizkova was only 19 years old at the time. The chemistry between the two, however, was undeniable and, by August 1989, they were happily married. Adding two sons – Jonathan and Oliver – to the mix, Ocasek says he’s with his soulmate and the love of his life after spending the last 27 years with his best friend and biggest fan by his side. How romantic!
