In Hollywood, looks matter above all else. You don’t have to be the most talented person in the world, as long as you are one of the best looking, you can make a career out of it (just look at Kim Kardashian.) People analyze every little aspect of a celebrity’s appearance down to their teeth. Haters are the first to point out which stars don’t have perfect chompers.
When someone has pearly white, straight teeth, they are usually described as having that Hollywood smile. Many celebrities have gained stardom despite not starting out their careers with perfect teeth. But once they started making the big bucks, they booked themselves in to a good dentist to fix them up.
After these said celebrities got their teeth fixed, many saw their stock go up higher than they ever imagined. Some of these stars had only slight problems with their teeth, while others looked like a picture straight out of the British Book of Dentistry (which may or may not be a real thing). So who are the celebrities that completely enhanced their look by fixing their teeth? Here are 15 best Hollywood smile makeovers.
Celine Dion is possibly the most popular singer to ever come out of Canada. Justin Bieber, Shania Twain and Anne Murray might have something to say about that, but the numbers lean in Dion’s favor. She has been belting out hits since the 1980’s, and gained a huge following with her theme from Titanic with “My Heart Will Go On”. Dion became the highest grossing singer in the world after taking up residency in Las Vegas.
While she was still a blooming star, Dion had a very humble look. Instead of having perfect hair and teeth, Dion sported curly locks and a vampire look with canines that could rip apart a steak without much effort. Now, her teeth are in perfect alignment, which likely didn’t make a dent in her $630 million net worth.
Zac Efron began his career at a very young age starring in the Disney Channel movie “High School Musical”. Since the movie debuted on television, Efron has had no trouble staying in the spotlight as an A-lister. These days, you can catch him in movies such as “Neighbors” and “The Lucky One”.
Before his “High School Musical” days, the Hollywood heartthrob once had very straggly hair and small teeth with a gap that would make Michael Strahan proud. A few years and a bit of work fixed that problem, leaving him with a great smile to match his dreamy looks.
Much like Zac Efron, Lindsay Lohan has been in the spotlight since she was very young. Instead of growing into a solid pair of teeth, Lindsay was graced with an uneven and discolored set. She got her teeth fixed in time for her starring role in “Mean Girls”, but years later, Lindsay had to get them fixed again. Due to heavy drinking and drug use, Lindsay’s teeth became horribly decayed and almost as yellow as her hair at the time. After enduring much media scrutiny on her bad teeth, Lindsay opted for a new set of veneers.
It’s been an odd career for Lohan, who got off to such a promising start. She has been in and out of trouble and of the spotlight. It’s hard to ever count Lohan out for good, but there have been times where it seemed like she was done.
50 Cent has been a player in the rap game for over a decade, and he finally hit the big time in the early 2000’s with “In Da Club”. 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, had a rough upbringing in New York City. Jackson was selling crack cocaine at the age of 12 to help make ends meet, but ended up, thankfully, going into music.
Years of living the rough life had a poor effect on 50 Cent’s teeth, as they once resembled a row of buildings after an earthquake. After undergoing dental work, 50 had his teeth straightened with only a slight gap left in the front, which is hardly noticeable and looks much better than before.
Nicolas Cage has been in the acting world for 35 years and he got his start at just 16 years old. Take a look back to see the young Cage before he launched into super stardom.
As a younger man, Cage had very crooked teeth and the discoloration was very noticeable. We’re not sure if he has a new set of teeth or just had his original chompers fixed, but he certainly looks much better than he did over 20 years ago. Cage is also an internet icon. For what reason, we’re not quite sure, but it is pretty funny.
Morgan Freeman has received high praise for his work in acting in philanthropy, much of which didn’t come until the late 1980’s. However, Freeman has been acting for over 50 years, which is an incredible feat. While Freeman’s voice has been the subject of much notoriety, it was his teeth that were a strange attraction during the rise of his career.
If you had to describe how Freeman’s teeth looked earlier in his career, it looked like they all fell out and someone without a knowledge of dentistry tried to hammer them back in randomly. There was almost no alignment to speak of. Freeman eventually had them fixed. Maybe his old teeth just couldn’t handle the silky smooth voice that was coming out of his mouth.
Madonna has been active in the music scene since 1979 and has amassed a fortune of a half billion dollars during her career. Madonna has been the source of some controversy in her time with hits such as “Like a Prayer” and “Like a Virgin” (why does everything have to be “Like A” something?). There’s no doubt that Madonna has had one of the greatest and most successful careers in music history.
Although Madonna comes from Michigan, we often hear her speak with a British accent. Perhaps it is because she had teeth that resembled that of a Brit rather than someone from the Midwest of America. With a large gap that you could drive a truck through as well as misalignment, Madonna has had her teeth fixed for the most part, leaving a bit of a gap to maintain her image.
Gwen Stefani may be in her mid-40’s, but people who have never seen her before would probably guess that she was in her early 30’s. Stefani has been singing since the age of 20 with her band No Doubt and they had a lot of success in the 1990’s. In 2004, Stefani launched her solo career which has been just as successful (if not more so). With $80 million in the bank and a 13 years (and counting) marriage to Gavin Rossdale, it’s been a good life for Stefani.
Stefani wasn’t always the beauty queen that she is now, though. When No Doubt started to make it big, Gwen was sporting strange pink hair and a set of braces. You don’t see many famous people with braces, so this was a fairly new concept to the public. The braces eventually came off, and we got the stunning Stefani that we see today.
Michael Douglas has been very influential in Hollywood for many, many years. Douglas has four Golden Globes to his name, as well as two Academy Awards. Since his role as Gordon Gekko in the film “Wall Street” opposite of Charlie Sheen, Douglas has had no trouble bringing people to movie theaters. There’s also the fact that his wife is the beautiful and talented, Catherine Zeta Jones.
Maybe Douglas would have never achieved the dream of many men in marrying Zeta Jones had it not been for the dental work he underwent. Douglas’s teeth weren’t the most crooked that you will see on this list, but they were discolored, so much so that today’s high definition cameras would definitely draw attention.
You don’t expect a teen star to have perfect teeth, since hardly any of us had teeth that we were proud of during our high school days. While she was a star on “Lizzie McGuire”, Duff didn’t have the best set, but she got a pass since she was so young. By the time she turned 18, Duff still didn’t have great teeth, so she opted to get some work done.
Her teeth weren’t awful, but they certainly weren’t Hollywood worthy. After getting veneers, Duff had the smile to match her beauty. She is now set to star in the show “Younger”, playing the lead role of Kelsey which will debut on TV Land. As long as those veneers stay in place, she should have no trouble dazzling audiences.
Tom Cruise is one of the biggest stars in movie history. With notable roles in “Top Gun”, “Mission: Impossible” and “Rain Man” to name a few, Cruise has drawn more money into Hollywood than just about anyone. He has also been in the news for a good portion of his life thanks to his marriages to Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes (neither of which lasted).
When Cruise got his start in “The Outsiders”, he was almost the total package but was missing one thing: a decent set of teeth. Cruise’s two front teeth were hardly even in the same zip code and it took extensive work for his teeth to look normal. Even though the problems have mainly been fixed, he still has one front tooth that oversets the other, making it asymmetrical. It’s still a huge improvement.
David Bowie has been a very successful singer in the rock genre of music that has spanned over into experimental and glam rock. It has been a rollercoaster ride of styles for Bowie over the course of his career, but it seems like he has had success regardless of his music genre. Bowie was named in the top 40 of the Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine, which is quite the accomplishment.
At nearly 70 years old, it seems like Bowie is ageless. Perhaps a lot of that has to do with his perfect teeth. Back in the 70′s, Bowie’s teeth weren’t so perfect. He looked like he had a mouthful of popcorn. These days, you can see perfect alignment in Bowie’s glowing smile, which matches his personality.
Kate Beckinsale was only 20 years old when she made her first appearance in the film, “Much Ado About Nothing”. The most impressive part of that achievement was the fact that she was still attending the very prestigious Oxford University while filming the movie. After school was over, Beckinsale went on to star in many other films, including “Underworld” and “Click”. It has been a great career for Beckinsale with a great education to fall back on.
Coming from England, the history of imperfect teeth is prevalent, even for this beauty. Although Beckinsale didn’t have the worst set of teeth on this list (by a wide margin), there was still some work left to do. After whitening and slight straightening, Beckinsale now has one of the best sets of teeth in all of Hollywood. It doesn’t seem like the starlet has aged in the last 20 years, either.
Many people don’t recall that George Clooney has been in the spotlight since the late 1970’s, initially in small roles. He finally got his big break on the show “ER” in 1994 which made him a household name. Clooney quickly parlayed the success from “ER” into bigger projects such as “Batman and Robin” and “Oceans Eleven”. He is still as popular as ever these days.
When Clooney broke into Hollywood, he was a good enough looking guy, but didn’t have that Hollywood smile. Clooney’s teeth weren’t too out of whack except for the front two, which seemed to have a mind of their own, going in different directions. After getting that problem straightened out (literally), Clooney now boasts a completely white and perfectly aligned smile for women to swoon over for years to come.
David Beckham is likely the most famous soccer (or football) player in the history of England. And that’s saying something because England has a very rich history in the sport. Beckham scored 114 goals in his professional and national career, and is known worldwide for his ability to bend a shot more than any other player.
Growing up with the Manchester United team, Beckham didn’t have the teeth that you would expect an international superstar to have. His teeth made a two dimensional picture look three dimensional because of the different layers. Beckham has since had his teeth fixed to perfection and is married to former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham, maintaining his global popularity.
